Blast From the Past

“Blast from the Past” fund raiser hosted at the Bull Frog Inn with Charlotte Hansen, accomplished ventriloquist entertaining those that braved a drenching rain storm. A raffle and Karaoke perfectly rounded out a fun filled evening. All proceeds went toward the “Prince Hairy” subsidized spay/neuter clinic. As well as slowing down the population explosion of unwanted and abandoned puppys, Spay and Neuter is an important step in eradicating TVT, a prevalent sexually transmissible disease amongst dogs in our communities. To read more about TVT go to our Health and Vets page.

Dog Obedience Camps

The Belmopan Humane Society hosted a series of camps throughout July and August, for young people and their canine companions in the Belmopan area. Dog trainer extraordinaire Peggy Rasp and several volunteers have donated their time to help young people get to know their dogs, and understand what their behaviour means. Please see photos below!

SPAY/NEUTER CLINIC 11TH JUNE 2011

Another successful low cost spay/neuter clinic was conducted at the BHS property in Belmopan thanks to Dr. Edwardo Tesecum, his two assistants, 5 BHS volunteers and 6 pre Vet students from the USA studying with (I.S.I.S) Institute for Sustainable International Studies.
Saturday 11th June, 8 dogs and 8 cats were either spayed or neutered. All have recovered well and the owners are very grateful for the helping hand.
Dr. Tesecum, from Veterinary Clinic PAWS located at #1 Joseph Andrews Drive in San Ignacio, has donated his time to many BHS subsidised low cost clinics in the past year and this is making a slow but noticeable difference in the numbers of stray and abandoned dogs and cats in Belmopan.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

We had our Annual General Meeting at the Belmopan Humane Society property on Sunday May 15th 2011.

A new board of directors was elected and our acheivements over the past year were discussed. Some of the things we have accomplished are as follows:

  • The winning of a grant from the U.S. Embassy to conduct the Be Kind Belize education programme,
  • A new library and stairs have been built in the Resource Center on the property,
  • Solar power was donated and has been installed to provide electricity at the property,
  • Rescuing and helping countless cats and dogs in and near Belmopan, and re-homing many of them to fantastic new homes,
  • Offering several low-cost spey and neuter and veterinary clinics in Belmopan,
  • Educating the public about how to look after their animals in a responsible and caring way.
